Computational Models of Conditioning

Computational Models of Conditioning
1 edition (December 6, 2010) | ISBN: 0521113644 | 284 pages | PDF | 3.5 MB
Since first described, multiple properties of classical conditioning have been discovered, establishing the need for mathematical models to help explain the defining features. The mathematical complexity of the models puts our understanding of their workings beyond the ability of our intuitive thinking and makes computer simulations irreplaceable. The complexity of the models frequently results in function redundancy, a natural property of biologically evolved systems that is much desired in technologically designed products. Experts provide the latest advancements in the field and present detailed descriptions of how the models simulate conditioned behaviour and its physiological bases. It offers advanced students and researchers examples of how the models are used to analyse existing experimental results and design future experiments. This volume is of great interest to psychologists and neuroscientists, as well as computer scientists and engineers searching for ideas applicable to the design of robots that mimic animal behaviour.

The Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Reassessment

Alexander R. Pruss, "The Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Reassessment"
C..dge U..ity Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0521184398 | 350 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) says that all contingent facts must have explanation. In this 2006 volume, which was the first on the topic in the English language in nearly half a century, Alexander Pruss examines the substantive philosophical issues raised by the Principle Reason. Discussing various forms of the PSR and selected historical episodes, from Parmenides, Leibnez, and Hume, Pruss defends the claim that every true contingent proposition must have an explanation against major objections, including Hume's imaginability argument and Peter van Inwagen's argument that the PSR entails modal fatalism. Pruss also provides a number of positive arguments for the PSR, based on considerations as different as the metaphysics of existence, counterfactuals and modality, negative explanations, and the everyday applicability of the PSR. Moreover, Pruss shows how the PSR would advance the discussion in a number of disparate fields, including meta-ethics and the philosophy of mathematics.

Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory (Repost)

Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387900527 | edition 1973 | PDF | 172 pages | 13,4 mb

This book is designed to introduce the reader to the theory of semisimple Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, with emphasis on representations. A good knowledge of linear algebra (including eigenvalues, bilinear forms, Euclidean spaces, and tensor products of vector spaces) is presupposed, as well as some acquaintance with the methods of abstractalgebra . The first four chapters might well be read by a bright undergraduate; however, the remaining three chapters are more demanding.

Capturing Better Photos and Video with your iPhone

Capturing Better Photos and Video with your iPhone | This book offers a ton of great advice on making your crappy camera phone snap shots into true frame-able works of art. Lets face it, more and more people are leaving behind their cameras because they already have one on the phone in their pocket. This book covers slick composition tricks and what apps to spend your hard earned money on. It’s a nice read and you will be surprised just how much info you will get out of it. This book has been so helpful and informative for me. I feel as if I am technologically disadvantaged, but this book really helped me take better pictures and learn more about the options and availability of accessories to take better photos. This was a very easy read and I am very happy with the purchase of this book.

Embedded C Programming and the Atmel AVR

Embedded C Programming and the Atmel AVR | This is a great book on embedded C programming. Although it focuses on the Atmel AVR microcontrollers, it is a useful reference for anyone doing embedded development! I have been an embedded systems developer for years and this is the first book that I have found that I keep at my desk for quick references – for software and hardware! If you know of the ATMEL AVRs, then you probably should own this book. If you are enw to the ATMEL, try this book or the “other” AVR book “Programming and Custominzing the AVR Microcontroller” ISBN 007134666X (by Dhananjay). This one is great for first timers learning microcontrollers. I picked up the Dhananjay book, never having done any microcontroller stuff, and was jamming in a week!!! This C-programming book starts out a little slower, as it has to teach some C-fundamentals….nevertheless, both are excellent books for one of the best 8-bit microcontrollers out there….a great starting point for students and engineers.

The Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology

The Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology | Well, it’s here. This is exciting stuff. If you don’t find it exciting it’s possible that you are unconcious. It actually is a relief to me that so much of this is considered controversial or fringe, which is so absurd. perhaps there’s a conspiracy by creationists/intelligent designists to select evolutionists as their advanced life forms. I want to be carful not to miss anyone who 400 years after Galleleo’s trial, decides now that he still needs forgiveness. We are truely at the threshold of a brave new world.

Writing Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror

Writing Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror | The general writing tips in this book are good, but I was a bit disappointed in the amount of tips specific for SF. There are few tips for fantasy, and almost no tips for horror writing. The book does handle basically all aspects of writing thoughs, from the first ideas and how to get them to how to find a publisher, so unless you already own books on writing this book is not a waste of money. I must say that in its further reading and publishing your book sections it is British-centered, but the general ideas there also hold true for America.

Handbook of Psychology, 12 Volume Set

Handbook of Psychology, 12 Volume Set | Each volume has its own editor(s) and contains some two dozen articles by experts who write well for an audience intended to include graduate students in behavioral science, professional psychologists who need a refresher course in their own specialty and/or an introduction to others, and educated readers outside of psychology who want to delve into it. Organized with great care, the set has a logical integrity unified by two threads: the history and evolution of each topic and the importance of research.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Readers’ Advisory

Science Fiction and Fantasy Readers’ Advisory | After reading through this book, I found that it was as complete a guide to Science Fiction as any previously read. The book is well laid out and the subject matter is complete and accurate. This manual is a “Must Have” for any Science Fiction buff, or any organization that needs to answer questions regarding the various subjects within the Science Fiction world. The various subsections dealing with different genre make this book capable of guiding the reader to any style of Science Fiction someone would want. Congratulations to Mr. Buker on a fine writing and hopefully we will see a second edition soon.
