Computational Models of Conditioning

Computational Models of Conditioning
1 edition (December 6, 2010) | ISBN: 0521113644 | 284 pages | PDF | 3.5 MB
Since first described, multiple properties of classical conditioning have been discovered, establishing the need for mathematical models to help explain the defining features. The mathematical complexity of the models puts our understanding of their workings beyond the ability of our intuitive thinking and makes computer simulations irreplaceable. The complexity of the models frequently results in function redundancy, a natural property of biologically evolved systems that is much desired in technologically designed products. Experts provide the latest advancements in the field and present detailed descriptions of how the models simulate conditioned behaviour and its physiological bases. It offers advanced students and researchers examples of how the models are used to analyse existing experimental results and design future experiments. This volume is of great interest to psychologists and neuroscientists, as well as computer scientists and engineers searching for ideas applicable to the design of robots that mimic animal behaviour.

The Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Reassessment

Alexander R. Pruss, "The Principle of Sufficient Reason: A Reassessment"
C..dge U..ity Press | 2010 | ISBN: 0521184398 | 350 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) says that all contingent facts must have explanation. In this 2006 volume, which was the first on the topic in the English language in nearly half a century, Alexander Pruss examines the substantive philosophical issues raised by the Principle Reason. Discussing various forms of the PSR and selected historical episodes, from Parmenides, Leibnez, and Hume, Pruss defends the claim that every true contingent proposition must have an explanation against major objections, including Hume's imaginability argument and Peter van Inwagen's argument that the PSR entails modal fatalism. Pruss also provides a number of positive arguments for the PSR, based on considerations as different as the metaphysics of existence, counterfactuals and modality, negative explanations, and the everyday applicability of the PSR. Moreover, Pruss shows how the PSR would advance the discussion in a number of disparate fields, including meta-ethics and the philosophy of mathematics.

Advanced Quantum Mechanics (Advanced Texts in Physics) (repost)

Advanced Quantum Mechanics (Advanced Texts in Physics)
Publisher: Springer; 2nd edition | ISBN: 3540401520 | edition 2003 | PDF | 405 pages | 3.5 mb

Advanced Quantum Mechanics, the second volume on quantum mechanics by Franz Schwabl, discusses nonrelativistic multi-particle systems, relativistic wave equations and relativistic fields. As expected in Schwabl's works, the text features a compelling mathematical presentation in which all intermediate steps are derived and where numerous examples for application and exercises help the student to gain a thorough working knowledge of the subject. The treatment of relativistic waveequations and their symmetries and the fundamentals of quantum field theory lay the foundations for advanced studies in solid-state physics, nuclear and elementary particle physics. This text extends and complements Schwabl's introductory Quantum Mechanics, which covers nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and offers a short treatment of the quantization of the radiation field.

Optimal Control: Basics and Beyond

Peter Whittle, "Optimal Control: Basics and Beyond"
Wil.y | 1996 | ISBN: 0471956791, 0471960993 | 474 pages | PDF | 10 MB
The concept of a system as an entity in its own right has emerged with increasing force in the past few decades in, for example, the areas of electrical and control engineering, economics, ecology, urban structures, automaton theory, operational research and industry. The more definite concept of a large-scale system is implicit in these applications, but is particularly evident in fields such as the study of communication networks, computer networks and neural networks. The Wiley-Interscience Series in Systems and Optimization has been established to serve the needs of researchers in these rapidly developing fields. It is intended for works concerned with developments in quantitative systems theory, applications of such theory in areas of interest, or associated methodology.
This is the first book-length treatment of risk-sensitive control, with many new results. The quadratic cost function of the standard LQG (linear/quadratic/Gaussian) treatment is replaced by the exponential of a quadratic, giving the so-called LEQG formulation allowing for a degree of optimism or pessimism on the part of the optimiser. The author is the first to achieve formulation and proof of risk-sensitive versions of the certainty-equivalence and separation principles. Further analysis allows one to formulate the optimization as the extremization of a path integral and to characterize the solution in terms of canonical factorization. It is thus possible to achieve the long-sought goal of an operational stochastic maximum principle, valid for a higher-order model, and in fact only evident when the models are extended to the risk-sensitive class. Additional results include deduction of compact relations between value functions and canonical factors, the exploitation of the equivalence between policy improvement and Newton??”Raphson methods and the direct relation of LEQG methods to the H??? and minimum-entropy methods. This book will prove essential reading for all graduate students, researchers and practitioners who have an interest in control theory including mathematicians, engineers, economists, physicists and psychologists. 1990 Stochastic Programming Peter Kall, University of Z??rich, Switzerland and Stein W. Wallace, University of Trondheim, Norway Stochastic Programming is the first textbook to provide a thorough and self-contained introduction to the subject. Carefully written to cover all necessary background material from both linear and non-linear programming, as well as probability theory, the book draws together the methods and techniques previously described in disparate sources. After introducing the terms and modelling issues when randomness is introduced in a deterministic mathematical programming model, the authors cover decision trees and dynamic programming, recourse problems, probabilistic constraints, preprocessing and network problems. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter. Throughout, the emphasis is on the appropriate use of the techniques, rather than on the underlying mathematical proofs and theories, making the book ideal for researchers and students in mathematical programming and operations research who wish to develop their skills in stochastic programming. 1994

Dynamics and Balancing of Multibody Systems

Himanshu Chaudhary and Subir Kumar Saha, "Dynamics and Balancing of Multibody Systems"
Spri nger | 2010 | ISBN: 3642096859 | 176 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

This monograph develops a unified methodology for dynamic analysis and minimization of the inertia-induced forces occurring in high speed multiloop planar as well as spatial mechanisms based on the multibody system modeling approach. Dynamic analysis is prerequisite for the dynamic balancing of mechanisms. The balancing of mechanisms is one of the crucial steps in design of high speed machinery and is a difficult one due to trade-off amongst various dynamic quantities, e.g., shaking force, shaking moment, bearing reactions, and driving torques/forces. Hence, it is essentially an optimization problem where various dynamic quantities are computed repeatedly.
